How to Get Here
Fly to San Jose, Costa Rica, or Liberia, Costa Rica.
Air Canada or Westjet direct from Montreal or Toronto.
Air Transat during high season only out of Montreal or Toronto
Copa Airlines from Montreal or Toronto, goes to San Jose only.
Options from either airport to the Southern Nicoya Peninsula are local flights, take about 25 min, drive. Takes about 2.45 hours from Liberia now with the fully paved roads, or 1.5 hr drive time plus 75 min ferry ride from San Jose. Or there are also shuttles you can arrange to pick you up and transport to Los Delfines. Details on shuttles provided further on.
Flying into Liberia is my preference to San Jose. It is a smaller airport and no ferry to have to wait for if your timing doesn't line up. Plus Pricesmart is right across from the airport where you can stock up on alcohol, food, etc. There is a membership but think it's $35 a year, and the savings are worth it. Great place to stock up on meat. But it comes down to best timings, shortest flight times and cost I’m sure.
There are small airlines that fly a few times a day from Liberia or San Jose to Tambor. My Tan Feet used to have discounts for flights, but don’t see local ones on there now. You can also get a shuttle from the airport to Los Delfines, or rent a car from Budget and drop off at Budget in Tambor. It is about 2.5 hr straight drive from Liberia. Drive time from San Jose is around 2 hours but there is a 1 hour ferry in there too, so takes longer time-wise. Both routes are fully paved now. San Jose is busier and more traffic so can end up with traffic delays. Flight time is only about 15-20 min from San Jose, probably just slightly longer from Liberia.
